Cardinal Keith O'Brien accused of sex assault while in office as Cardinal

Cardinal Keith O'Brien, the disgraced former head of the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland, has been accused of sexually assaulting a priest when he was already a Cardinal

He is alleged to have attempted to grope the man in Rome on the night of a drinks party to celebrate becoming a "prince of the Church" in October 2003, attended by a raft of bishops and dignitaries.
It is the first allegation to relate directly to his time as a Cardinal and the first suggestion that his sexual misconduct extended to the centre of the Catholic Church.

It follows an admission by the Cardinal that he was guilty of sexual misconduct, with his personal standards falling below those expected of him "as a priest, archbishop and cardinal".

His accuser, a priest now based in London, is said to have complained to the Vatican last year, prompting his departure as leader of the Catholic Church in Scotland, months before separate allegations relating to the 1980s came to light.

Cardinal O'Brien, who turns 75 on Sunday, announced last November that he would be stepping down as leader of the Scottish Catholic Bishops Conference and signalled that he was making plans for retirement.
At the time, his decision was put down to a severe gout condition which left him in hospital.
But it was reported earlier this month that he had secretly been summoned to Rome after the priest who alleges he was abused there complained directly to the Vatican.

Cardinal Marc Ouellet, the head of the Vatican's bishops department, is said to have overseen the case. It led to accusations that the authorities in Rome were trying to orchestrate a "cover-up", sending the Cardinal quietly into retirement without scandal.

But when four other priests came forward last month the case was referred directly to Pope Benedict.
In one of the last acts of his pontificate, he effectively sacked Cardinal O'Brien by ordering that his resignation, already submitted, would be accepted with immediate effect.

Pope Francis, elected last Wednesday, will now have to decide whether or not to strip him of his position as a Cardinal, one of only a handful of such cases in the last 200 years. Doing so would enable the Pope to send out a strong signal that he plans to clamp down on misconduct at the very top of the Church.

The latest details came to light in a report in the Scottish newspaper, The Herald , which said that the alleged assault took place at the Scots College in Rome, where he was staying for the consistory at which he was made a Cardinal by Pope John Paul II. No-one from the college was available for comment yesterday. The Scottish Bishops Conference said that all cases involving Cardinal O'Brien had been passed straight to the Vatican.

"A number of complaints have been passed directly to the Vatican, the detail and nature of them is not known to the Bishops' Conference of Scotland," a spokesman said. Cardinal O'Brien has left Scotland and was unavailable for comment.

During his time as leader of the Catholic Church in Scotland he became known as one of the most vehement opponents of gay marriage, which he said would lead to "further degeneration of society into immorality."

Last year he was voted "bigot of the year" by Stonewall, the gay rights group. But following his admission, Peter Tatchell said he "pitied" Cardinal O'Brien who he said was obviously suffering from "self-loathing and deeply repressed homosexual desires".

Eight dead after bus overturns east of Beirut, Lebanon

BEIRUT: Eight people were killed and 29 others were wounded after a bus carrying Syrian nationals overturned Friday morning on the Kahaleh highway east of Beirut, the Lebanese Red Cross said.

"The evacuation had been called off three hours after the accident, which took place around 4:45, a.m.," Red Cross official George Kettaneh said.

Security sources told The Daily Star the bus, which carried a Syrian license plate, tipped over at the steep slope at Kahaleh in the district of Aley, Mount Lebanon, about 13 kilometers from the capital.

Lebanese Red Cross teams rushed the wounded to nearby hospitals.

The sources said the bus, registered in Syria’s northeastern province of Hasakeh, was heading to Beirut when the accident took place.

The highway was blocked in both directions after the fatal crash and police diverted traffic off the main road.
Efforts were still under way to remove the bus and clear the road.

Tottenham reportedly subjected to racist chants by Inter Milan fans

Tottenham players were reportedly subjected to racist chants by Inter Milan supporters, who were also seen waving an inflatable banana, in Thursday night's UEFA Europa League game.

Spurs lost 4-1 after extra-time on the night but progressed to the quarter-finals on away goals after the tie finished 4-4 on aggregate.

However, much of the aftermath to the thrilling encounter will surround what action governing body UEFA will take against Inter after racism seemingly reared its ugly head.

Monkey chants appeared to be aimed at several Tottenham players, notably goalscorer Emmanuel Adebayor, while a fan was seen with an inflatable banana.

It is not the first occasion Spurs have had problems against Italian sides this season.

Lazio were fined for racist chanting in their Group J tie at White Hart Lane in September and were reprimanded again for racist behaviour in November's return game

Profile: Pope Francis

Born in Argentina, Pope Francis is the first Latin American to lead the Roman Catholic Church, as well as the first Jesuit.
"It seems my brother cardinals went almost to the end of the world" to choose a pope, he told the crowd in St Peter's Square in his first address - a joke which belied his image as the cardinal who never smiles.
Up until 13 March, he was Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires.
Analysts did not see him as a favourite for the job of succeeding Benedict XVI and his advanced age - at 76, he is just two years younger than Benedict at the time of his election in 2005 - may have surprised those expecting a younger man as the 266th Pope.
However, he appeals to both Church conservatives and reformers, being seen as orthodox on sexual matters, for instance, but liberal on social justice - through far from being a "liberation theologist".

Humble lifestyle
He was born on 17 December 1936 in Buenos Aires, of Italian descent.
According to his official Vatican biography, he was ordained as a Jesuit in 1969 and went on to study in Argentina and Germany.

He became a bishop in 1992 and Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998. At the 2005 conclave, he was seen as a contender for the papacy.
His election took many by surprise in his home city, where many had thought his age ruled him out, says the BBC's Marcia Carmo in Buenos Aires. But any surprise soon gave way to the jubilant blaring of car horns on the streets.

As Cardinal Bergoglio, his sermons always had an impact in Argentina and he often stressed social inclusion, indirectly criticising governments that did not pay attention to those on the margins of society, our correspondent says.

Francesca Ambrogetti, who co-authored a biography of him, told Reuters news agency that part of his public appeal lay in his "sober and austere" humble lifestyle.
"That's the way he lives," she said. "He travels on the underground, the bus, when he goes to Rome he flies economy class."

In Buenos Aires, he lived in a simple flat in the building of the Archdiocese.
When in Rome, BBC Latin America analyst Eric Camara writes, he often preferred to keep his black robe on, instead of the cardinal's red and purple vest he is entitled to wear.

He is also said to have re-used the cardinal's vest used by his predecessor.
